Local artists and designers visited the new Design Museum Boston office at Space with a Soul for our latest UNITE event on Friday, November 18th. Co-hosted by Fort Point Arts Community (FPAC) and the Design Industry Group of Massachusetts (DIGMA), attendees filled Space with a Soul’s event space overlooking Fort Point Channel and Back Bay.

This particular UNITE event marked the public kickoff of the Our Town grant program, a partnership between Design Museum Boston, DIGMA, MassArt, and the City of Boston. With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the program aims to elevate the presence and use of design in the development of the South Boston Waterfront.

With drinks provided by Harpoon Brewery and M.S. Walker, attendees mixed and mingled throughout the night. The delicious food from our new neighbor, Channel Cafe, was provided by Massachusetts College of Art & Design.

Karen Stein, board member for FPAC, began the evening’s presentation with a welcome message and introduction of FPAC. Throughout the night images of FPAC members’ artwork scrolled on the projector screen. Anne Marie Stein introduced DIGMA and their mission to raise the profile of Massachusetts as a worldwide leader in design. Derek Cascio, DMB Co-Founder, then introduced the museum and spoke about upcoming programs and events. He was followed by Co-Founder, Sam Aquillano, who outlined goals for Our Town including using design as a planning process, a cultural amplifier, and an economic driver. He mentioned the next step in the program will be to hold town hall meetings with residents and businesses to discuss upcoming projects.

Design Museum Boston is run by volunteers and our volunteers did an amazing job making people feel at home and facilitating a great time for all. Stay tuned for our next UNITE event coming in early 2012.
